Schwarz Etienne: Premium Watches Since 1902

Schwarz Etienne have a rich history in luxury watchmaking and are among the few Swiss manufacturers to produce 100% of their watches in-house. The company's business strategy ensures high-quality timepieces with exceptional designs.

A Long-Standing Manufacturer

Schwarz Etienne have over 120 years of experience in the Swiss watch industry. The brand started out making ébauche movements for other brands, eventually graduating to a fully-fledged watch manufacturer in the 1980s.

The company is based in the Jura mountains in Switzerland and has a strong foothold in the luxury watch market. In fact, Schwarz Etienne produce almost all components of their timepieces in-house, something that's quite rare on the watchmaking scene – most Swiss watchmakers source the majority of their components from industry suppliers.

Schwarz Etienne watches are characterized by a mix of modern and classic design elements. Their current range includes simple dress watches with small seconds, GMT watches, and timepieces with tourbillons. However, you will also find numerous chronographs, diving watches, and models with retrograde displays from older collections on the secondary market.

Schwarz Etienne specialize in automatic calibers with micro-rotors and their "inverted manufacture movement" assembly. Inverted manufacture movements flip the standard movement configuration, meaning that components usually hidden on the reverse of the watch, such as the winding rotor and balance wheel, are visible on the dial side.

Both men and women will find exclusive timepieces to their taste in the Schwarz Etienne collection. Depending on the model series, you have the choice between stainless steel, rose gold, and white gold cases. There are also watches adorned with diamonds.

How much does a Schwarz Etienne watch cost?

Prices for Schwarz Etienne watches start at less than 1,000 USD on Chrono24. These are mostly older models like the Professional Diver, which use movements from ETA. Chronographs from around the same time cost closer to 1,600 USD.

Watches in the current collections are more costly; expect to see prices between 8,100 and 44,000 USD, depending on the respective model's complications and materials.

Schwarz Etienne Roma: A Classic Dress Watch

The Roma collection offers elegant dress watches with a small seconds at 6 o'clock and elaborately finished dials. The dials boast a number of different textures; the center, for example, often has a radial pattern, while the surrounding minute track is grainy. Depending on the exact model, you'll find trapezoidal indices, applied Arabic numerals, or a combination of both marking the hours. The lancet hands round off the classic design.

The Roma Geometry deviates somewhat from the blueprint used for the other Roma watches. For the Geometry, Schwarz Etienne opted for a sector dial. Not only do the individual sectors have different finishes, but they are also offset from one another, giving the dials a degree of dynamism.

Schwarz Etienne equip the watches in the Roma series with automatic or manual in-house calibers. For example, the Roma Power Reserve, featuring a power reserve indicator, is powered by the manual caliber MSE 111.00, while the Roma Synergy, designed by master watchmaker Kari Voutilainen, uses the automatic caliber ASE 200.00. The movement ticking in the Roma GMT, on the other hand, is the automatic ASE 120.00.

Depending on the model you choose, you can expect to pay anywhere between 7,500 and 33,000 USD for a Schwarz Etienne Roma.

Schwarz Etienne Roswell: Inspired by UFOs

The watches in the Roswell collection are inspired by the phenomenon of flying saucers. The round case has several accentuated edges, which, along with the elongated crown guard and slightly domed sapphire crystal, gives the model an air of modernity.

However, the timepiece's most impressive feature is its movement. Roswell watches use different versions of the ISE caliber series with the inverted manufacture movement construction. This assembly flips the components usually found on the back of the movement to the forefront. This is why you'll find the micro-rotor at 9 o'clock, and the balance wheel at 2. Schwarz Etienne also incorporated a small rotating disc at 11 o'clock, which hosts the small seconds.

The Roswell 08 takes things a step further and does away with the dial altogether. This means that the entire movement is on display, including the date mechanism. The bridges and plates are either blue or brown depending on the model. To top things off, the bridge on the underside of the watch features a Matrix-inspired, code-like pattern.

The reverse side of the Roswell Voyage is decorated with a fragment of rock taken from and molded into the shape of the peak of the Matterhorn in the Swiss Alps. The motif is also found on the rotor at 9 o'clock.

Schwarz Etienne watches from the Roswell collection are a rare find on Chrono24. The official list price is 15,400 EUR (approx. 17,000 USD).

Schwarz Etienne La Chaux-de-Fonds: Tourbillon Watch

With the La Chaux-de-Fonds collection, Schwarz Etienne pay tribute to the watchmaking stronghold in the Swiss canton of Neuchâtel, where the manufacturer is based. The watches combine classic elements such as round cases, stepped bezels and lugs, and Roman numerals with modern, inverted manufacture calibers from the TSE series. In this case, the T stands for tourbillon, which you can admire at 1 o'clock through the skeletonized dial.

Schwarz Etienne offer several versions of the La Chaux-de-Fonds. The Flying Tourbillon, as the name gives away, has a flying tourbillon that seems to float in the movement. The Petite Seconde Rétrograde has a retrograde display for the small seconds at 11 o'clock. The time is displayed off-center on a subdial at 5 o'clock.

Up until a few years ago, the collection also included the La Chaux-de-Fonds Jumping Hours, a model which features a flying tourbillon, a central retrograde minute display, and a window with a jumping hour. One interesting submodel is the La Chaux-de-Fonds Jumping Hours Ode à la Semaine. This limited-edition series comes in seven versions, each dedicated to a specific day of the week and the corresponding celestial body from Greek and Roman mythology. You'll notice that the crown is in a different position in each of the seven versions.

Prices for a Schwarz Etienne La Chaux-de-Fonds come in at around 45,000 USD on Chrono24.

Schwarz Etienne Fiji for Women

Schwarz Etienne dedicate their Fiji collection to women's watches. The watches have an elegant round case with a 38-mm diameter and are housed in either polished stainless steel or 18-karat rose gold. The dial consists of a central section with a stylized floral pattern, surrounded by a slightly raised hour ring with teardrop-shaped, applied indices.

The most spectacular element on these watches, however, is the small seconds subdial at 6 o'clock. Schwarz Etienne revisit the flower motif, cutting out the petals from the dial. Directly below them is a two-tone rotating disc, which gives the impression that the small seconds is swaying in the wind.

Expect prices for the Schwarz Etienne Fiji to come in anywhere between 11,000 and 19,000 USD.

Chronographs and Other Models From Schwarz Etienne

In addition to the watches in the brand's current portfolio, you will also find a range of older models on Chrono24, mostly those produced before 2007. Schwarz Etienne's various chronographs are particularly popular. One example is the Schwarz Etienne Tricompax Chronograph Automatic. With screw-down push-pieces and subdials at 3, 6, and 9 o'clock, it's an affordable alternative to the Rolex Daytona. If you prefer your subdials at 6, 9, and 12, you should take a look at the Schwarz Etienne Routemaster Automatic.

The Schwarz Etienne Villeroy Chronograph has a more classic design with a tonneau-shaped case measuring 34 × 44 mm.

Schwarz Etienne chronographs generally house refined ETA movements such as the Valjoux 7750 or ETA 2894-2. Prices for these timepieces range from 1,400 to 2,100 USD, depending on the model.

Other interesting watches no longer part of the Schwarz Etienne range include the 1930s-style pilot's watch Flight Controller and the Schwarz Etienne Professional Diver diving watch. Depending on the model and its condition, you should be prepared to part with between 550 and 1,100 USD.

The History of Schwarz Etienne

Schwarz Etienne's beginnings date back to 1902, when watchmaker Paul Arthur Schwarz and his wife Olga Etienne set up a small workshop in La Chaux-de-Fonds. There, they mainly produced movements for other companies, including Caran d'Ache, Chanel, Mauboussin, and Dunhill. Schwarz-Etienne (then still written with a hyphen in the name) also manufactured watches under the brand names Venus and Alpha.

When the couple's sons Gaston, Herbert, and Henri-Louis Schwarz took over at the beginning of the 1940s, the company began to expand internationally. By the end of the 1960s, the Vatican and the Soviet politician Leonid Brezhnev were among the watchmaker's clientele.

With the onset of the quartz crisis in the early 1970s, Schwarz-Etienne had to significantly diversify production. Watches only made up a small part of their portfolio until the early 1990s, when Schwarz Etienne began to market watches under their own name (dropping the hyphen). One of the main drivers behind this development was Swiss entrepreneur Raffaello Radicchi, who joined the company as a partner in 1993 and took it over completely in 2007. He made Schwarz Etienne the main pillar of the Radicchi Horlogerie Group, which now also includes movement specialist E2O, case and bracelet manufacturer RSM, and bridge and plate producer TMH.

In addition to producing timepieces, Schwarz Etienne also offer their expertise to other watch brands. One recent example is the microbrand Ming, whose creations are manufactured in Schwarz Etienne's production facilities.
